Pranayama (Breath control) is the 4th limb in Pantanjali’s 8 limb path to self realisation. The word Prana refers to ‘energy’ or ‘life force’. It is the essence that keeps us alive as well as the energy in the universe around us. Prana often describes the breath, and by working with the way we breathe and starting to understand it, we begin to affect the quality of the mind in a very direct way. Pranayama is sometimes described as the ‘jewel in the crown of yoga practise’ and can be both personal and profound.

In this course we will look at some of the fundamental breath rhythms common in the yoga tradition as well as the benefits and effects of using the 3 main Bandhas (locks / specific muscular activation) during breath work. We will explore both calming and more stimulating breathing techniques plus look at Mula bandha (root lock), Uddiyana bandha (Upward Flying Lock) and Jalandhara bandha (Chin lock). We will look at Pranayama and the Bandhas from both a traditional perspective and a scientific / western one. We will ensure we have the time to ask questions and the space to feel the gentle effects of pranayama practice upon the mind and body.

Each night will begin with a short but precise warm up to prepare the body for sitting. We will then set up our seat to ensure we are comfortable by using props and explore a few different breath rhythms. After the breathing practice we will move into a seated meditation where we will have time to notice and absorb the effects of the breath and bandha work setting up the conditions for stillness and joy to arise. We will then finish each night with a long, deep savasana to further release and relax and help to assimilate all that you have learnt.

A basic level of yoga experience will help you get the most out of this course. If you have any health conditions please get in contact to discuss suitability. We recommend you wear comfortable clothing you can move freely in and bring something like a spare t-shirt, scarf or eye mask to cover your eyes for shavasana.
